FOOD INSECURITY exists on South Whidbey Island. Our goal is to provide supplemental, nutritious, prepared meals to those in need, including the homeless community and children in families who are part of the working poor. Many of our children participate in free and reduced breakfast and lunch programs and their families may also receive SNAP benefits. However, the benefits are insufficient to cover food for any given month. These kids need the supplemental nutritious food to eat on weekends and during non-school vacation periods.
DURING 2014, we served more than 20,000 much needed take home meals. The prepared meals include a protein sandwich made on whole wheat bread, fresh fruit, fresh vegetables, yogurt, granola, hard-boiled eggs, milk, string cheese, trail mix and a home-baked treat. We accommodate special needs such as nut, wheat and dairy allergies.
MANY CHILDREN IN OUR COMMUNITY receive their main meals at school. With 32% of the kids in our school district, from K-12, needing help with consistent meals, WIN is helping provide meals for non-school days as well as for those who don't have a facility in which to cook a meal.
OUR GOAL is to provide nutritious, complete meals that will keep refrigerated for a few days. All of the food is freshly prepared and distributed by our wonderful volunteers.
EVERY CHILD SHOULD HAVE CONSISTENT NUTRITION so they can grow, mentally and physically, into healthy adults.
