FOOD INSECURITY exists on South Whidbey Island. Our goal is to provide supplemental, nutritious, prepared meals to those in need, including the homeless community and children in families who are part of the working poor. Many of our children participate in free and reduced breakfast and lunch programs and their families may also receive SNAP benefits. However, the benefits are insufficient to cover food for any given month. These kids need the supplemental nutritious food to eat on week- ends and during non-school vacation periods.
During 2014, we served more than 20,000 much needed, take-home meals. The prepared meals include a protein sandwich made on whole wheat bread, fresh fruit, fresh vegetables, yogurt, granola, hard-boiled eggs, milk, string cheese, trail mix, and a home-baked treat. We accommodate special needs such as nut, wheat and dairy allergies.
Our goal is to reduce food insecurity on South Whidbey, especially for kids. Every child should have consistent nutrition so they can grow, mentally and physically, into healthy adults.
